I feel lonely, sad and don't know what my purpose is in this life.
Life can be overwhelming. Sometimes we get sad, we feel alone and don't know what the hell we are meant to be doing in this wild world.
We catch ourselves thinking ...is this it?
If this is you or you've had similar feelings there are ways to move forward.
The first step is to get out of your own head. Fill it with some fresh material to light up your soul, let it present you with new ideas and just provide you with some new bounce.
Books and Audio Books
I love listening to audio books when I get in a funk. They energise me and I always end up in a different head space.
I'm going to share with you the ones that have really made a difference in my life, allowed me to mentally go to another place and feel like I was valuable again. Here goes...
1. 7 habits of Highly Effective People - incredible and changed my world in every way.
- Brene Brown - I love all of her books but the big one for me was Rising Strong.
- The Fear Fighter Manual by Luvvie Ajayi Jones- read with loads of sass and will fire you up.
- The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks - This is about overcoming your barrier to happiness and fulfilment. Loved it!
- Boundary Boss by Terri Cole - I bet you don’t realise that you do not set boundaries and give so much sometimes that you almost die. This isn’t good and Terri informs you how you can break free from over functioning, people pleasing and ignoring your own needs. This is divine!
Start here with these 5 books and I guarantee you'll feel different after you read them. New ideas and emotions flood your mind and like magic, youre in a different place with a better mindset.
Move that Toosh!
Exercise can sometimes feel like a dirty word BUT to feel better, to not feel sad you really do need to move your body. When I’m sad I combine a walk outdoors while listening to an audio book. Its a double whammy of happy drugs right there.
If you feel sad, lonely or down, earth out. Try to get your feet on the grass or if you live near the ocean, on the sand. You need to reset your body. Get rid of negative ions and fill your brain with oxygen. I try to walk every day but in reality I more likely walk 4 times per week.
Remember a little bit of exercise, even 10 minutes is better than nothing at all. I always say I’ll just go for 10 minutes but I always go for a lot more. It’s about tricking your brain into it.
Say YES to stuff!
My mum is 70 years old in June but has the mindset of a 30 year old. She told me that part of her theory of feeling good is to say yes to nearly everything.
She does this and is always busy because she says yes to a yoga class, then meets people, then says yes to coffee, then sees a class on a board at the coffee shop and signs up to do it.
Her life is always interesting and full because she says yes and is always learning and trying new things.
This is hard to do and sometimes nothing is better than a blanky, popcorn and netflix but this cannot be the norm. You must say yes to life to not feel sad and alone.
Try it for two weeks and I bet you will have some new experiences that uplifts your soul.
Humour!
We have a couple of favourite comedians that we love in our family. Sometimes when life is arduous, I just put them up on the tv and gut laugh. I make some tea or pour a glass of wine and settle in to be entertained. Before long I am physically laughing and the endorphins are kicking in.
This is hard to do when you don’t feel like laughing but if you just do a 5 or 10 minute rule ( i.e I’m only going to do this for 5-10mins) it always works. It’s simple but it will lift your mindset.
Morning Ritual
This is my favourite. I cannot recommend it enough. I know it has achieved so much hype on instagram and tik tok but this stuff is real and creates incredible emotional change. This is what I do. I wake up at 6am and I go for a walk, mostly listening to an uplifting audio book or if I’m lucky enough I’m joined by my glorious daughter or close friend. I walk outdoors in nature and always make a mental note to appreciate the view.
When I come home, I make coffee (one of my great loves) and I write down three things I’m grateful for. Then I journal about the things to do for the day and pick a quote to write down that I love. I also read over the ten things I want to achieve in my life in the next 5 years.
Am I perfect and do I do this every day? No but almost…its the consistency that is gold!
This process makes me feel like I’ve got wonderful things in my life, like I’m in control and that I have a purpose. I feel like I’m in the driver's seat and am not just meandering through life.Try it my darlings, it will heal your heart.
If you're in a funk or want to move forward try these five things and I know that the magic you bring to this life will be revealed.
Stay well, stay brave and mostly know that you are valued.
Happy, happy days Ladybugs!
